Protect Our Winters (and Health) PT 2/4 — (11''x16" edition of 10)
Scientists have long recognized and warned that climate change would encourage the spread of infectious disease, and while there is no direct evidence of the current pandemic being connected to climate change, we do know that the warmer the planet is, the more ‘selection events’ happen, and the more pathogens are adapted to higher temperatures. Bats body temperatures often jump to as high as 105 deg F, and thus can carry pathogens that will harm humans without being affected themselves. The desire to go snowboarding and skiing may animate our action around climate, but so much is at stake. For all my friends, family, and followers; don’t panic, but do prepare to stay home for an extended period of time. Stay calm and we’ll all get through this.
But when this is all over, let’s reassess our priorities around conventional energy—rather than bail out oil and gas companies, we should invest in renewable energy and universal health care to ensure that we are prepared next time a pathogen sweeps the global community.
Stay safe, wash your hands, and love each other.
